Understanding Dental Crowns

A dental crown covers or replaces the visible portion of your tooth. We can either use them to cap a damaged tooth or complete a dental implant restoration.

Crowns are made to measure from metal, resin, or porcelain. Your crown will not only restore the appearance of your smile but also protect the tooth and prevent decay and damage.

Metal Crowns

We may use metal crowns for the less visible teeth in the back of your mouth that are used for chewing food. Metal restorations are durable and can last for many years.

Resin Crowns

If you want a more realistic crown, we may use resin. These are perfect for more visible teeth. However, this lower-cost option isn’t as durable as other types of crowns.

Porcelain Crowns

If you want the best of both worlds, porcelain crowns are the best choice. Porcelain provides a realistic look and is more robust than resin.

The Crown Process

We’ll always begin with a consultation to assess the tooth’s health on which we will place the crown. This is also an opportunity to tell you what to expect from the procedure and answer your questions.

Before we can place a crown, we’ll need to prep your tooth. After providing an anaesthetic for increased comfort, we’ll remove some of the outer layers of your tooth and shape it.

Next, our skilled lab will create your new crowns based on assessments and impressions we take from your smile. When the crown is ready, it’s bonded to the tooth. Once in position, it will stay firmly in place, looking and feeling as though it’s your own tooth.

Understanding Dental Bridges

Bridges are dental restorations to replace missing teeth. Although we could use several different types of bridges, they all include at least one ‘pontic’ —a natural replacement tooth. The pontic is typically supported by dental crowns on neighbouring teeth. Alternatively, we may use a metal support structure.

Traditional Bridges

The pontics in traditional bridges take their support from a crown on either side.

Cantilever Bridges

A cantilever bridge only requires one crown to support it. We’ll use these where only one tooth is available.

Maryland Bridges

Instead of crowns, Maryland bridges are supported by metal structures bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth using composite resin.

How Dental Bridges Are Built

Before planning your procedure, we need to assess the health of your smile and determine which bridge to use. We’ll explain the treatment process during this initial consultation and answer your questions.

If you need crowns to support your dental bridge, we’ll prepare your teeth by removing a small portion of enamel, creating space for the crown. We’ll provide anaesthetic to ensure a painless experience.

The experienced lab technicians will then create your bespoke bridge. Once it’s ready, we’ll fix it into position. Finally, it’s over to you to enjoy your new smile.
