Can I Eat and Drink Normally with Invisalign?
Choosing Invisalign is an excellent decision if you’re looking for a discreet and convenient way to straighten your teeth. But as with any new treatment, it’s natural to have questions, particularly about how it fits into everyday life.
One of the most common things our patients at Dental Aesthetica ask is, “Can I eat and drink normally with Invisalign?”
The answer is yes, with a few small changes to help protect both your aligners and your smile.
In this guide, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about eating and drinking during your Invisalign treatment.
Eating with Invisalign
You’ll need to remove your aligners whenever you eat. Invisalign aligners are made from a high-quality, transparent plastic that is custom-fitted to your teeth.
While they’re durable enough to guide your teeth into place, they aren’t designed to withstand chewing. Eating with them in place could cause cracks, warping, or discolouration, and it may trap food between your teeth and the aligner, leading to plaque build-up and tooth decay.
The good news is that, once you’ve removed them, you can eat whatever you like. Unlike fixed braces, Invisalign doesn’t come with a list of restricted foods. There are no brackets or wires to worry about—just be sure to clean your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
Drinking with Invisalign
This is where a bit more caution is needed. The only thing we recommend drinking while wearing your aligners is plain water. Hot drinks like tea or coffee can warp the plastic, while sugary, acidic or coloured drinks such as fruit juice, cola or wine can stain the aligners and increase the risk of tooth decay.
If you do want to enjoy a hot or flavoured drink, it’s best to remove your aligners first. Afterwards, rinse your mouth, or better yet, brush your teeth, before putting them back in. This helps to keep both your teeth and aligners clean and protects your enamel from acid attacks.
What About Snacking?
Snacking can become more of a conscious choice during Invisalign treatment. Because you need to remove your aligners each time you eat or drink anything other than water, many patients naturally reduce how often they snack during the day.
This isn’t a bad thing, especially if you’re trying to cut down on sugar. But if you do fancy a snack, just remember to remove your aligners first, then clean your teeth before wearing them again.
Brushing and Cleaning After Eating
To keep your treatment on track and your mouth healthy, it’s important to brush your teeth after every meal and snack. This removes any leftover food or sugar that could become trapped under the aligners. If brushing isn’t possible straight away, say you’re out and about, then rinsing your mouth with water or chewing sugar-free gum can help until you get the chance to clean properly.
Rinsing your aligners under lukewarm water before reinserting them can also help keep them clean and fresh. Just make sure the water isn’t too hot, as heat can distort the shape of the plastic.
How Long Should I Wear My Aligners?
Invisalign works best when aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours each day. This gives you a few short windows of time to eat, drink, and clean your teeth, but it’s important not to leave them out for too long. The more consistently you wear your aligners, the more efficient and effective your treatment will be.
We recommend getting into a routine: remove your aligners only for meals and brushing, then pop them straight back in. Delaying this part can slow down your progress or even cause discomfort when reinserting them after a long gap.
Can I Still Enjoy the Foods I Love?
Yes, you absolutely can. One of Invisalign’s biggest advantages over traditional braces is that it doesn’t restrict your diet. You can still enjoy crunchy vegetables, chewy bread, steak, nuts, popcorn, and even sticky toffees, just as long as your aligners are safely removed beforehand.
After eating, take a moment to brush or rinse, and then put your aligners back in. This simple step protects your teeth and helps keep your aligners in top condition.
Keeping Life Simple During Treatment
To make life easier while wearing Invisalign, many of our patients find it helpful to keep a small dental care kit with them at all times. This could include a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, floss or interdental brushes, and a case to store your aligners when they’re out. That way, you’re always prepared, whether you’re at work, school, or out for dinner.
The most important thing is to maintain a good routine: remove your aligners when eating and drinking, clean your teeth afterwards, and wear your aligners for as many hours as recommended. With a little planning, Invisalign can fit smoothly into your day-to-day life.
Can I Eat and Drink Normally with Invisalign?
So, can you eat and drink normally with Invisalign? The answer is yes, with a few mindful habits. Removing your aligners for meals and drinks, keeping up good oral hygiene, and being consistent with wear time will all help you get the most out of your treatment.

I've had a range of treatments over the last year from both Dr Adnan and Dr Amir, getting treatments to clean, whiten and straighten my teeth. The entire team made me feel welcome, re-assured me about my anxiety around having work done on my teeth, and supported me in every way during the process. They were transparent about pricing, the process and presented me with the pros and cons of each option. I fully recommend them and their services!

Came in for an emergency appointment through a recommendation, and as someone who isn’t great with the dentist, my experience was by far and away the best I have ever had.
