What Is Bone Augmentation?

A bone augmentation, or graft, is a procedure to rebuild your jaw. There are several types of graft. Each uses a small portion of natural or synthetic bone added to your jaw. Over time, the additional bone will fuse with and strengthen your jaw.

Synthetic Graft

A bone graft for dental implants is a surgical procedure that adds bone material to the jaw to create a strong foundation for the implant when insufficient natural bone is present.

Sinus Lift

When rebuilding your upper jaw, we may perform a sinus lift. This graft is placed between your upper jaw and the sinus membrane at the back of your mouth.

What To Expect From Regenerative Bone Graft Treatment

The Consultation

Before your bone graft procedure, we’ll assess your health and check your suitability. During your assessment, we’ll take digital scans and X-rays of your jaw to plan the next steps.

This initial consultation is an opportunity to learn more about how we’ll perform your bone graft and ask any questions.

The Procedure

We’ll provide an anaesthetic to manage pain and discomfort before your bone graft. If you’re having an autograft procedure, we’ll harvest a small amount of bone from another area before placing it onto the treatment site.

We do not need to harvest any bone for synthetic grafts and will add the graft material directly to the treatment site.

The Future

It can take a few months for your bone to fuse fully. Your healing time may depend on your age, general health, and the type of graft. We’ll evaluate your progress, and when you’re ready, we can invite you for further dental implant procedures if necessary.
